KZRadio: “Hakatze” (The edge) Was the longest running alternative show on nation-wide music radio Galgalatz. During it’s 13 years span on FM the show gained many loyal listeners. On january 2012 the show went off air due to station management’s decision. Listeners protested and signed petitions, but nothing helped: The biggest public music radio station in Israel gave up on cutting edge music and went totally mainstream. Instead of joining a rival radio station, The show’s hosts Quami and Nadav Ravid decided to start their own radio station. They recruited some of Israels best DJ’s and music collectors, and asked me to join the project to be in charge of the technical side. on March 2012 I began building the radio station’s facilities in collaboration with the BPM Sound Collage, and Since the launch of the station, on April the 1st, 2012, i’m taking care of it’s daily operation. all the jingles, the studio and the web streaming are under my responsibility . A crew of over 20 people is involved in everyday live broadcast.
Running the station is a frantic, intense job. Quami and Nadav probably didn’t choose the easiest way by opening an independent radio station at these times of recession – Almost any other radio station in Israel would happily employ them, But they decided to go their own way and start their own platform. And it turns out that the listeners love the idea of an everyday alternative radio: The positive feedback and the rapidly growing community around our station are proving us right.
KZradio broadcasts Live every day from our Tel-Aviv studio, and once a week from A studio we installed in the very house of Israels best known radio DJ and music collector, Yoav Kutner. We give special attention to local music, with live in-studio sessions of Israeli indie artists. We also air special shows from important alternative culture events across the country. Lateley, a public governmental radio IBA 88FM decided to share it’s frequency with our station during night-time. So practically, KZradio is back on nation-wide FM, bigger than ever before.
After an extremely successful crowd-funding campaign, We are now building a new Website that will be the most advanced radio experience ever offered to Israeli listeners, as well as going on air on cable TV, mobile applications, in-vehicle entertainment consoles, public addressing systems and much more. Our live stream and our Archive can be picked up Here. More Info about our shows and a schedule can be found in this PDF. After a year of operation, I’ll admit that KZradio is one of the the most exciting projects i was ever involved in.
This was my final project at Bezalel, academy for art and design, Jerusalem, after 4 year study for a B.F.A degree. I’ve been working on it for almost a year and a half and It’s been screened at the yearly Bezalel exhibition. (17 Minutes, Hebrew, Subtitles).
“We Are Ghosts”: Is A Collective of artists, musicians and sound enthusiasts who meet every couple of months in a special, carefully-selected location, and record an improvised set of whatever comes out of their minds. the outcome drifts from shoe-gazy drone to post-rock to ambient noise. all the recordings are processed, mixed and mastered in the best way possible. The 6th time the group met was in the Studio with me, for another improvised limitless session. This time I was their recording engieneer along with Benny “morphlexis” Asterlis. The whole thing was recorded at the amazing “Kol Hakampus 106FM” college radio studios, as part of their “Harake” Israeli album release project. I also occasionaly find myself on stage with this amazing experimantal, using some crazy improvised percussion or toys. This album has been mastered and printed in Hard copy by the radio stations’ label and is available in Iarael:
I actually to know this studio pretty good, as I used to help out as a technician for the live sessions in various shows at the station.I provided live sound mixing for many Israeli bands on the “Napoleon” Show – the Israeli Indie radio fanzine with Leon Feldman, (A Few example: Drunk machine, I got the hotties). Now, after 15 years at the collage radio, Leon joined us at KZradio, where he continues to explore and expose Israeli indie and alternative music.
“Bike Rider” – a project by multidisciplinary artist Digital_Me (Shai Librowski) – I had the honor to do the final audio mastering for this multi-media project, that evolves around the world of the Tel-Avivian bike rider in the almost-impossible motorized jungle of Israel’s biggest and most dense urban area. The project is a Audio-Video mash-up featuring a mesmerizing wealth of cultural references to Israeli culture, from the most obscure to utter mainstream, in what is actually a musical tour-guide to doing Tel-Aviv by bike.
Here’s a Teaser:
1335 video: A collaboration with my gifted sister.
Shot with a canon 550D, and a HD video projector. song by Dillon.
Some colours and lights: Yet another one from the Bezalel days.
VITARTI: which means in Hebrew “I gave up”, is a hilarious hardcore punk band, utilizing very sick humor and screaming about Israeli typical stories and other issues with a really fucked up twist. If you don’t know hebrew, try to google translate the names of the following songs:
I recorded some of the tracks for their first EP, and got a T-shirt that says “I gave up”. And I still think it was a pretty good deal.
Cannons: A brilliant indie/britrock band from Tel Aviv. I shot this live preformance with my DSLR and mixed the live sound. editing and grading were done by Omer Shapira.
Grab some more of their music. It’s Good.
“The Israeli Intelligence”: This is a pun and also a cult movie I’ve been heavily involved in it’s making during the years 2003-2006. I helped out with field recording, camera and general production assistance, (and also as an extra for a couple of seconds..) In Hebrew the movie’s name refers to the secret services but also means an asylum.
(Yes, that’s my voice there) “The Israeli Intelligence” is a nonsense “Naked gun” style forty minutes action movie parody that criticizes the Israeli militarism.
The movie, portraying two dimwit Israeli Intelligence agents being sent to a questionable mission in the fake carrot-obsessed country ”sujaiyra”, was screened on Israel’s Channel 2 and is still showing every other Friday in the Tel-Aviv Cinematheque , while Avid crowd loudly chants all the movie’s dialogues and accompanies their performance with various props and costumes, somewhat like the cult that follows the rocky horror picture show.
The movie won prizes in various comedy festivals all over the world: Houston Comedy Film Festival 2009, Toronto World Of Comedy Film Festival 2009, Action On Film Festival 2010 and more.
The movie was produced by the “Hipopotam” group. Hipopotam started as a LoFi-DIY, nonsense humor radio show in the late 90′s, evolved into producing video sketches (which i also took part in producing), and in 2006 the “Israeli Intelligence” movie was finally completed.
Now “Hipopotam” seek fundings for the sequel, which is supposed to be just as fuzzy, crazy, non-linear and hilarious.
